Finding food for dogs with allergies can be one of the greatest challenges an owner can face. Unresolved allergies are often mistreated with extensive medication, or the dog is left to endure the effects of allergy, such as constant itch, loose stool and a lot of frustration. At The Dog’s Assistant, allergies are our specialty, and we will help you find out what your dog is allergic to, and what he can eat that is healthy, tasty and available.

  • Signs a Food is working for YOUR dog – minimal, well formed stool, shiny coat, clear eyes and ears, minimal gas and balanced mood, healthy weight.
  • Signs of Allergy – frequent, heavy stool that is unformed or soft with a light colour, dull coat, under or over weight, dull eyes, lack of energy, chronic health issues, dry flakey skin.
  • Signs a Food is NOT working for your dog – chronic ear infections, itchy paws, discoloured skin (around face, paws, flanks etc.), itchy body, loose or unformed stool, irritated mood.

Most dogs with allergies are found to be frequently chewing at their paws, scratching their ears, rubbing their face on carpets/furniture, shifting their skin or leaning into scratching from owners, have runny eyes or smelly, dirty ears or never have consistently good stool.

Common Allergens

  • Stainless steel bowls often cause an itchy or discoloured face. The best alternative is ceramic. Plastic can cause discolouration of the nose.
  • Environmental, like ragweed, pollen, grasses and certain trees. These are typically only seen in the spring and fall.
  • Proteins such as beef, lamb and chicken, as they are the most common protein sources in kibbles and treats.
